Outerlands

In Outerlands, Asia Kate Dillon stars as Cass, a San Franciscan gig worker juggling several low-paying jobs, from babysitter to waiter and part-time party drug dealer. When a new crush, Kalli (Louisa Krause) asks them to babysit her daughter, Ari (Ridley Asha Bateman), Cass can’t refuse, seeing that it’s a paying job. When Kalli disappears, an unlikely bond forms between Cass and Ari that leads them to confront their own trauma of abandonment and uncertainty.

Set against the city’s shifting skyline, Outerlands is a poetic exploration of resilience, found family, and the search for connection on the margins. A hit at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival, Oxman’s directorial debut is a rewarding slow burn. Oxman has a poetic eye for small gestures of queer resilience that speak volumes, promising to be an important new voice in queer indie cinema. Dillon offers a standout performance as they navigate the precarious rhythms of life in a gentrifying San Francisco.

Event Image Description Two people, a child and adult, sit across from each other in a dimly lit restaurant diner booth. The child on the left, wearing a pink hoodie looks down at their food and orange juice with their hand resting on their forehead. The adult on the right wears a burnt-orange beanie, and a blue sweatshirt, and has tattoos on their neck, gazing intently at the child and holding a bottle of beer. On the table between them are their drinks, a plate of fries, and condiments, with closed green blinds in the background. The scene feels quiet and tense.
